UX Design Intern

Background

After 2 years of applying, being overlooked, learning, growing, and reapplying, I earned the lone UX Design Internship being offered at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I was selected out of over 200 applicants across the Western US. I worked under strict NDA, so, sadly, I cannot share assets from my time here.

During my six month internship, I worked on two separate teams. For the first part of my contract, I worked on the Design System Team. The team was made up of 3-4 designers and myself. We maintained and supported the organization's "Unity" Design System based on Atomic Design Priniciples. We collaborated closely with the organization's Global Visual Style Guide department to ensure that all products closely followed organization branding and identity.

The Unity Design system contains 13 thousand components and is used by about 150 teams. These components are inserted about 11 thousand times a week. The Unity System saves the organization over $1 Million dollars in year-over-year over head costs.

During my time on the team, I designed a number of components. I spent the majority of my time transitioning mobile components from iOS 16 to 17 using Apple's Human Interface Guidelines (HIG) and from Material Design 2 (M2) to M3. In addition to those changes, I helped write documentation for all of the changes- including use cases, helpful tips, and specific guidelines.

Web Team

I designed web interfaces for a volunteer management platform that handled lead tracking, contact management, and real-time conversations. One of my key contributions was building a unified chat experience using design system components.

I crafted a messaging interface that integrated with platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger via API, allowing volunteers to communicate seamlessly without switching apps, streamlining their workflow, and improving efficiency.

Lessons Learned

This experience taught me the value of persistence—not just in landing the role, but in navigating complex systems and evolving standards. Working within a mature design system at scale sharpened my ability to balance consistency with innovation, especially when transitioning patterns across platforms and guidelines.

I also learned how invisible work, like maintaining atomic structure or aligning with global brand standards—can have massive organizational impact. It’s not always glamorous, but it’s essential.

Most importantly, I came to appreciate that great UX design is often about enabling others. Whether it’s 150 product teams or thousands of volunteers, the systems we design become tools for real people doing real work. That perspective has fundamentally shaped how I approach design today.
